With\nspring weather that swings between snow flurries and blazing sun, stored grain\nis particularly vulnerable to the weather conditions. While the hatch doors are\nessential for ventilating the grain, they can also be an entry point for snow\nduring big storms. A crop intended for human consumption that is not checked on\na monthly basis\u2014especially in spring\u2014may be downgraded when it is received\naccording to the Official Grain Grading Guide<\/em> by the Canadian Grain Commission <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below\nare the best practices to follow each month to prevent unforeseen problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do\na visual and olfactory inspection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Climb\nthe ladder, lift the silo cover and inspect the grain\u2019s appearance. You can\nidentify water leaks by the colour of the grain as it will be much darker,\nhaving turned from white or pale beige to brown. A rancid odour is another sign\nof a water leak. Remember that there may be a barely perceptible tower of mould\nrunning down from the surface, as you are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

React\nquickly to major shifts in weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When\nthe weather is still cold, it is easy to detect any snow that has entered the\nsilo. The snow can easily be removed with a shovel before it causes damage.\nHowever, when the weather warms up, the snow will melt, causing the damp grain\nto expand and mould. Heavy rains create the same problem, especially in\ncombination with high winds. When this occurs, you must turn the bulk in the\nsilo to ventilate the grains and allow the moisture to evaporate. This is why\nit\u2019s important to inspect the silos after all weather events, like the last of\nthe April showers, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control\nthe moisture content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Soybeans\nkeep well at 14 % moisture or less. A moisture content exceeding 15 % will make\nthe crop susceptible to mould, and the risk of losing your crop increases\nexponentially with each additional percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remove\nthe affected grain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou find mould and suspect that it has been there for a certain time, you must\nremove the affected grain to try and save the crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flatten\nthe cone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In\nfall, it is important to flatten the grain mass to minimize the accumulation of\nmoisture that can lead to rancidity or mouldy grains. This is a crucial step!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
