The loss percentage still needs to be measured to determine whether or not the machinery needs adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this second in a two-part series of blog posts, you will learn how to calculate the loss percentage and understand the source of the grain losses left on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>A fiew points <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The producer should aim for no more than a 3&nbsp;% loss to achieve acceptable profitability;<\/li><li>A poorly adjusted combine can cause losses as high as 15&nbsp;%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Talking about the weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Soybeans are usually harvested when the leaves have dried and dropped from the plants and the seeds are mature. However, some weather conditions can adversely affect the harvesting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In damp weather, the soybean plants may stay wet. The pods are more fragile then and can split open or shatter. Harvesting still has to be done, since the more the season progresses, the greater the risk of the soybean pods shattering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Soybean losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Pre-harvest losses:<\/strong> Poor weather conditions, diseases and insects, the timing of the harvest;<\/li><li><strong>Header losses:<\/strong> Improperly positioned reel, missing knives or fingers;<\/li><li><strong>Machine leakage losses:<\/strong> Cleanout trap is open or poorly adjusted, missing or broken seal, holes;<\/li><li><strong>Separation losses:<\/strong> Wrong concave (rotor) speed, concave blocked or incorrectly spaced, green immature crop; <\/li><li><strong>Cleaning losses:<\/strong> Passes incorrectly adjusted, poorly adjusted fan speed. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"468\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1.jpg 468w, https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1-24x10.jpg 24w, https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1-36x15.jpg 36w, https:\/\/prograin.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/08\/Image1-1-48x20.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A<\/strong> = Pre-harvest losses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B-A<\/strong> = Header losses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C-B-A<\/strong> = Machine leakage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D-C-B-A<\/strong> = Threshing, separation and cleaning losses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Key steps in determining harvest losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Make a square 1 ft\u00b2 frame; <\/li><li>Place the frame on the ground behind the combine and count the number of seeds on the ground within the frame; <\/li><li>Estimate the size of your soybeans: For small soybeans size, 5 soybeans \/ ft\u00b2 is approximately equal to 36.744 kg loss\/acre.
