The final number of leaves depends mainly on the variety, but also on environmental conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog article, we explore the vegetative stages of the soybean. We also discuss misconceptions and reality; and analyze the impacts of insects and diseases on the leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Effects on leaves in the vegetative stages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early vegetative stages, soybean leaves may sometimes be paler than normal. The reason is simply that they were exposed to cooler soil and air temperatures. With the return of fine weather, the leaves usually recover their natural color and there is no loss of yield. If this isn\u2019t the case, the soybeans are probably suffering from <a href=\"https:\/\/prograin.ca\/ca\/en\/2020\/07\/23\/nutrient-deficiencies-in-soybeans\/\">nutrient deficiencies<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/prograin.ca\/ca\/en\/2024\/06\/20\/accelerated-aging-which-disease-are-we-dealing-with\/\">disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insects can also damage soybean leaves, especially the upper ones.&nbsp;To minimize losses, the lower leaves have the capacity to absorb more light through increased photosynthesis. Rice (Iowa University)<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Vegetative stages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VE: Emergence (5 to 15 days) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Cotyledons above the soil surface; dependent on soil temperature, planting date and planting depth.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VC: Unifoliolate leaves unrolled (3 to 10 days)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The first two leaves are unifoliate and occur opposite each other on the stem at what is considered the first node.<\/li><li>The cotyledons under the leaves are the initial reserve of nutrients and energy until photosynthesis begins.
